What Is a POV Camera? Types, Specs and How to Choose

If you have spent any time looking at action cameras lately, you have probably noticed a smaller category creeping in beside the familiar boxy models: cameras designed to be worn rather than held. They get called POV cameras, wearable cameras, clip cameras, or sometimes just "that little magnetic one." This guide explains what actually defines the category, where the different types diverge, and how to work out which one suits how you film.

What makes a camera a POV camera

POV stands for point of view. The defining idea is that the footage shows roughly what you saw, from where you were standing, rather than a framed shot of you doing something. In practice, three characteristics separate a POV camera from a regular camera:

  • It mounts to you or your gear. Clips, magnets, straps or harnesses, rather than a grip or a tripod.
  • It records hands-free. Once it is on and running, you should not need to touch it again.
  • It is light enough to forget. If you are constantly aware of it, you will end up taking it off, and a camera you take off records nothing.

That last point matters more than the spec sheet. The most common reason people stop using an action camera is not image quality. It is friction.

The main types

Traditional action cameras

The rugged, rectangular models most people picture. They are the most capable option, with the widest range of resolutions, frame rates and accessories, and they handle water and impact well. The trade-off is bulk. A typical body sits somewhere between 130g and 200g, which is enough to feel on a cap brim or a shirt collar over a long day.

Wearable clip-on cameras

The newer sub-category, and the one that has grown fastest. These are small enough to sit on a lapel, a strap or a bag, usually held by a magnetic mount, and are often described as thumb-sized or pill-shaped. They generally record in 4K with a wide lens and electronic stabilisation. You give up some of the frame-rate range and low-light performance of a full action camera, and you get back a camera you will actually wear on an ordinary Tuesday.

Body cameras

Built for documentation rather than filmmaking. Long record times, plain footage, timestamping, and a design intended to be obvious rather than cinematic. Useful for work contexts; rarely what someone means when they want travel or riding footage.

Smart glasses

Camera integrated into an eyewear frame. The angle matches your eyeline more closely than any mount can, which is genuinely compelling. In exchange you get smaller sensors, shorter battery life, less weather resistance, and the most social friction of any option, since people cannot tell whether you are recording.

The specs that actually change your footage

Resolution is the number everyone quotes and rarely the number that decides whether a clip is watchable. Three others matter more:

  • Stabilisation. A worn camera picks up every footfall and every bump in the road. Electronic stabilisation crops into the sensor to cancel that motion. Without it, walking footage is unusable and cycling footage is worse.
  • Real battery life. Manufacturer figures usually assume a lower resolution with stabilisation off. Assume less than the headline, and check whether a spare battery is included, because swapping one is far more practical than finding a charger mid-day.
  • Field of view. A wide lens, typically around 120 degrees, keeps the subject in frame when the camera is strapped to a moving body and cannot be aimed. Narrower lenses look better but demand aiming you cannot do hands-free.

Choosing by how you will actually use it

Rather than comparing sensors, work backwards from the situation:

  • Extreme sport, mounted to a helmet or board. A full action camera. You want the frame rates, the ruggedness and the mount ecosystem, and weight matters less on a helmet than on a shirt.
  • Everyday capture, travel, riding, walking, ordinary days. A wearable clip-on. The camera you will bring beats the camera that performs better in a lab.
  • Underwater beyond a metre or two. Check the rating carefully. Many wearables need a housing for anything past rain and splashes.
  • Low light and evening footage. Sensor size dominates here, and this is where the smallest cameras struggle most. Set expectations accordingly.
